The economic bounty delivered by cruise ships to Alaska
has been countered by numerous impacts on local culture and
environment,
including the deliberate disposal of hazardous wastes into ALaska's
Inside passage. The Royal Caribbean Cruise Limited (RCCL) was recently
convicted on 21 felony charges of illegal waste disposal. Many other
fleets
have been equally deliberate or negligent in their waste disposal
practices. Almost all ships in a recent test failed the
sewage treatment tests, dumping virtually untreated wastes into the
sea. State
legislative measures have recently been introduced to require
monitoring and
reporting of ship discharges.
