Cruise ships that travel to the highly sensitive
ecosystems of
the Arctic and Antarctic can
have significant
environmental impact. The UNEP/UNESCO?World
Tourism Organization Tour Operators Initiative for Sustainable Tourism Development (TOI)
industry members are
committed to reducing the impact of tourism on these sensitive
landscapes. Hapag-Lloyd Kreuzfahrten (HLK)
addresses this issue by employing appropriate technology on its ships,
including biological sewage plants, waste incineration or port
discharge, and
thick-hulled construction. Ship paint is free from highly toxic organotin compounds. Tour guides are trained in
all aspects
of the culture and environment of the destination.
