Bulletin, 2000, 75 (November), 6-7
Abstract: Solid waste generated on the island states of the
eastern
Caribbean threatens the health of the marine and terrestrial
environment, and
thus the sustainability of the tourist industry. The economically
important
cruise ship industry contributes a high level of
waste to these islands. An effective monitoring program is a first step
in a
waste management strategy. A recommended monitoring program separates
municipal, industrial, commercial industrial, ship-generated, and
medical
wastes. Solid Waste Management Bodies (SWMBs)
were
established to take care of these responsibilities. Recommendations
were made
with regard to types and amounts of wastes landfilled,
environmental impacts from the landfill site, and beach and street
litter
monitoring.
